That Beat-Up Floor Still Has Life in It

Maybe it's the floor in your restaurant, your shop, or your home. Scratches and dark marks run along every path people walk. Some boards are cracked or stained. The whole floor has gone dull and gray. It's easy to think the only fix is tearing it all out.

Often, it isn't. We've refinished hardwood floors across Norwalk and Fairfield County for over 15 years. That includes a big old warehouse floor in South Norwalk, near the train station and the Washington Street historic district.

Call us at (475) 203-6216 and we'll come look at your floor. No charge, no obligation, just a straight answer.

Before / After

Before we started, this floor was beaten up. Marks and scratches covered it. Many boards were broken, and others were stained. The old surface had gone gray from the tall windows all the way back to the corridor, where paint marks ran along the bottom boards.

About a week later, the same floor has a warm, natural glow. It runs from the steel-frame windows to the bar and the brewing tanks. The brick, the steel, and the open ducts overhead all look right at home with it.

Weaving New Boards Into the Old Floor

Many boards were too broken or stained to save. We pulled them out and wove new boards in. Each new board goes in at its own length, staggered with the old boards around it. That way the repair follows the floor's pattern, not a square patch that stands out. We also took care of the floor grilles across the space.

Serving Homes and Businesses Across Norwalk and Fairfield County

South Norwalk is full of old buildings doing new jobs. The Maritime Aquarium sits in an old factory building on Norwalk Harbor. In the warmer months, a ferry leaves SoNo for the Sheffield Island Lighthouse, out at the edge of the Norwalk Islands. Across the harbor in East Norwalk, Calf Pasture Beach looks out toward Peck Ledge Lighthouse, which marks the way into the harbor.

We refinish floors all over Norwalk, from Rowayton and Silvermine to Broad River and Spring Hill. Outside the city, we work in Westport, Wilton, New Canaan, and Darien. Restaurant, shop, or house, every job starts the same way: we come see the floor first.

Sanding a Big, Open Floor

Up to 3,000 square feet of open room is a lot of floor. We sanded all of it, old boards and new, down to fresh wood so the whole floor sits flat and even. That took off the marks, the gray, and what was left of the old surface. The edges took extra care: along the brick walls, around the steel columns, and right up against the bar.

FAQ

Can an old commercial hardwood floor be refinished instead of replaced?

1

Often, yes. If the boards are thick and solid enough to sand, broken pieces can be replaced and the whole floor refinished.

That's what happened in this SoNo warehouse. Many boards were replaced first, then the whole open floor was sanded and finished.

What is a natural finish on a hardwood floor?

2

A natural finish means no stain. A clear finish goes right on the bare wood, so you see the wood's own color and grain.

It's a good fit for industrial spaces like this brewery, where the goal is to keep the building's raw, original look.

Old boards have had years to darken. New boards haven't yet, so without a stain to even out the color, they start out lighter.

Wood tends to warm and darken with time and light, and oil-based finishes amber as they age, so the gap tends to shrink over the years.

Why do new boards look lighter than the old floor at first?

3

How long will my business need to close for floor refinishing?

4

It depends on size and repairs. This 2,500 to 3,000 square foot brewery floor, with many boards replaced, took about one week.

This floor was done before the brewery opened. If your business is already open, talk with us early so the work fits your schedule.
