Before / After
Before this project began, the home's floors were unfinished subfloor and raw oak boards waiting on layout, staining, and finish, the kind of blank canvas that a high-end build demands before the design comes together. The standout detail on this job was the custom herringbone pattern, bordered with a Peruvian walnut strip inlay, installed in the formal rooms alongside the red mahogany and medium brown stained white oak used throughout the rest of the home.
The curved staircase received custom-shaped stair treads, milled to match the surrounding floor rather than dropped in as a standard off-the-shelf size. One added complication: the homeowner's furniture was already moved into the house before installation started. That meant sealing the chandelier, island, and furnishings under plastic sheeting and running dust containment equipment through every phase of sanding and finishing, so the rest of the home stayed clean while the crew worked room to room.
Subfloor Prep & Acclimation
Before installation began, the clear-grade white oak was brought on site to acclimate to the home's actual conditions, and the plywood subfloor was checked and prepped to receive a full glue-down installation across both levels.
Staining & Water-Based Finish
Different rooms called for different tones, red mahogany in some spaces, medium brown in others, matched carefully so the transitions between rooms read as intentional design choices rather than inconsistencies. The full installation was finished with a water-based polyurethane topcoat.
Wide-Plank Glue-Down Installation
The wide-plank boards were glued down directly to the plywood subfloor rather than nailed, a method suited to wide-plank flooring and to a home with this much open, uninterrupted floor space. Keeping every seam tight across such wide rooms was the job's central technical demand.
Staircase Detail Work
Both staircases were finished to match the field flooring exactly, carrying the same clear-grade white oak and natural finish up each run so the transition between floors reads as one continuous material rather than two separate jobs stitched together.
