Before this project began, the home's floors were unfinished subfloor and raw oak boards waiting on layout, staining, and finish, the kind of blank canvas that a high-end build demands before the design comes together. The standout detail on this job was the custom herringbone pattern, bordered with a Peruvian walnut strip inlay, installed in the formal rooms alongside the red mahogany and medium brown stained white oak used throughout the rest of the home.
The curved staircase received custom-shaped stair treads, milled to match the surrounding floor rather than dropped in as a standard off-the-shelf size. One added complication: the homeowner's furniture was already moved into the house before installation started. That meant sealing the chandelier, island, and furnishings under plastic sheeting and running dust containment equipment through every phase of sanding and finishing, so the rest of the home stayed clean while the crew worked room to room.
Site Protection & Dust Containment
Because the home was already furnished, the first step wasn't sanding — it was protection. The crew sealed the chandelier, kitchen island, and furniture in plastic sheeting and set up dust containment systems before any sanding began, keeping fine wood dust out of the rest of the living space.
Staining & Water-Based Finish
Different rooms called for different tones, red mahogany in some spaces, medium brown in others, matched carefully so the transitions between rooms read as intentional design choices rather than inconsistencies. The full installation was finished with a water-based polyurethane topcoat.
Custom Herringbone Layout & Wood Inlay
The formal rooms called for a herringbone pattern bordered with a Peruvian walnut strip inlay, a layout that takes more planning than a standard straight-plank install, since each angled board has to line up cleanly against the border with no visible gaps.
Whole-Home Installation & Custom Stair Treads
White oak was installed across both the first and second floors, and the curved staircase received stair treads custom-shaped to match the herringbone and straight-plank floors on either level, rather than standard pre-cut treads.
